| 1st Annual "Run to Remember" August 29 - September 1, 2008 |
Our friend and classmate, Steve Underwood, died from brain cancer in January 2005. His family wanted to do
something to honor Steve, remember him, and make an effort to raise money for brain cancer research.
Dennis Voyles, our '68 classmate who is married to Steve's sister, Sheila, decided he wanted to do something
personal...not only to honor Steve, but for all former SE Spartans who have died from cancer. He decided to run
from Steve's home in Reagan, OK (near Tishimingo) to Southeast High School...a total of 108 miles... over the
Labor Day weekend. With the help and support of his family he left Steve's home on Friday evening. Running
until dark that evening and then on Saturday and Sunday, he arrived at SE to a cheering crowd at high noon on
Monday. There were smiles and tears as family, former SE classmates, and friends greeted Dennis as he ran
across the "finish line" in the parking lot at Southeast High School.
The Voyles/Underwood family plan to run in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in April 2009. They are hoping
to have a team of former SE classmates run on "Team Underwood" wearing SE shirts. There are also plans for a
golf tournament in Tishimingo in the future. The family is dedicated to raise money for brain cancer research.
